Imke Brummer

After completing my master’s degree in Sociology of Education at University College London, I started working as a lecturer at the University of Amsterdam (in the Information Science programme) and as a policy officer at the VO Council. In 2019, I decided to pursue a PhD at the University of Antwerp with a thesis on citizenship, belonging and the role of emotions within these themes in education. During my PhD programme, I spent a research period in Gothenburg, Sweden, where I further explored the sociology of emotions. In September 2024, I successfully defended my thesis.

I am currently working as a postdoctoral researcher at Erasmus University Rotterdam. Here, I am investigating how democratic participation takes shape in everyday school practices, with a focus on emotions, conflict and the position of voices that are less likely to be heard. Using qualitative and participatory methods, I investigate how teachers and children deal with differences, power relations and questions of justice in super-diverse educational contexts.
