Max Kusters

My name is Max Kusters. I am an Assistant Professor at the GION Education/Research Centre, University of Groningen. I obtained my PhD at the ICLON, Leiden University, on the theme of teacher agency in universities. My research focused on how teachers in higher education experience and create space to act professionally and shape educational development.

I conducted the final part of my doctoral research at the University of Stirling in Scotland, where I collaborated with Mark Priestley and Lizzie Rushton. I am also involved in collaborations on a special issue on student and teacher agency, which will soon be published in Pedagogische Studiƫn.

In addition to my research, I have been active in the VOR (Association of University Lecturers), including as chair of the VPO (Association of University Lecturers) and as a board member of the Higher Education division. I was also a member of the ICO education committee and, in 2023, one of Caroline’s assistants at the International Spring School. In my current work, I combine research and education at the intersection of teacher agency, professional space and educational development. I am very fond of the ICO and am therefore very much looking forward to the Graduate Spring School!
